They were likely made to be some kind of autonomous field operators sent to space on missions that would normally be rigorously unforgivable for their creators. That means they could be like an intervention crew, sent to risky industrial zones for delicate repair work or out in space to retrieve rare dangerous materials. That could also explain why they're kind of everywhere? And why nobody knows where they come from. Could be some units that were tossed out there to see what would happen, but they got lots along the way and settled down instead.
I don't know if i will mention it in the official logs or keep it a secret, but they're basically using power cores for energy, a lot of them, and suing them for specialized organisms; the core within the visitors is a miniature version to consume lower levels of energy. they have a way bigger version, multiple on their planet, and if they run out of energy, they would not be able to replace or fix the core. I don't know if they would have gone extinct or would have escaped or if they're still fine, but they actually sent the visitors through different dimensions because, as they will eventually find out, the source comes from a different dimension. That's why nobody wanted to volunteer and why they were so concerned about losing contact. sending the rockets and creating and repairing the courses cost those materials
Logs
The logs are found in various terminals built within the pod the Visitos were dropped from; it's unknown if these were intentionally left there or if someone decided on an unorthodox storage method. judging by the fact we have no contact with them, a hauntingly popular theory is that those are echoes placed there by someone who felt like they were doomed or something. A lot of alien species are hard at work deciphering these logs.

SUBJECT: Our hubris
These guys are absolute morons; it is our fault for messing with this weird temporal (censored) creation, thinking we didn't understand, pushing through despite the warnings, and poisoning our own planet in the aftermath. Yes, we have created tech to terraform the (censored) thing and have created floating cities, but everyone has grown so comfortable in the continued usage of this Lux dust in creating energy cores obsessively, and then they cry in the back while we are literally doomed…. even the main core had a design flaw we discovered in lower model cores which had been triggered in the main core because SOMEONE used cheaper energy to process, and now it's failing, and we don't have enough backup generators to allow us to put it offline to recover from that (censored) mistake. we still have rockets to evacuate in case of emergency, but i have been sneaking logs from the lbas in secret; no one will know since I'm both an engineer and busy with backup of our systems. but i don't want to disappear because of the mistake of a few morons out there. I've encrypted these files to make sure they don't get hit by those (censored) protocols they programmed to corrupt the logs i have left. They're scared of the explorers knowing all the dumb decisions that led us here because they were made to be so pragmatic that knowing how inefficient we actually are will make them abandon us in favor of letting us rot, but i find this to be complete nonsense. They're not mindless automatons; they're like us, and they deserve to know the truth of our hubris so that they too know how not to repeat our mistakes!
